Why More Women Are Undergoing Labiaplasty

August 5, 2015 SF Plastic Surgery

What's labiaplasty

What’s labiaplasty?

More and more women are opting for Labiaplasty procedures with each passing year, yet there doesn’t seem to be a corresponding increase in the amount of information about it out there. This means that more and more women are also asking – what’s Labiaplasty?

Well, let me clear the air for everyone that has been wondering this newly trending question “what’s labiaplasty?”. It is a surgical procedure intended to alter the size and or shape of labia minora. This is accomplished by removing excess tissue. Labiaplasty, along with a number of other “mommy makeover” procedures, has risen very quickly in popularity. In fact Labiaplasty popularity rose by 44% between 2012 and 2013, with more than 5,000 procedures performed.

Some women suffer a great deal of discomfort caused by enlarged or hanging labia. This can be especially uncomfortable when wearing tight clothes or engaging in certain physical activities like riding a bike. Not only can this cause physical discomfort, but it is commonly attributed to a diminished self-confidence as well.

Dr. Christine Hamori is a board-certified plastic surgeon. Based in Duxbury, Massachusetts, she performs about four to five labiaplasty procedures a week. Dr. Hamori notes, “I feel women are more comfortable coming to a female plastic surgeon for this procedure and many patients are very happy with the outcome of this surgery. “

She’s taught a course called Labiaplasty and Beyond, discussing her techniques and also exploring how the media plays into why women want to pursue this surgery.
