Labiaplasty Methods: Trim Technique or Wedge Technique?

June 26, 2016 SF Plastic Surgery

labiaplasty methods

Labiaplasty is a cosmetic surgery procedure used for altering the inner labia and the outer labia (aka the labia minora and labia majora). It is also sometimes referred to as vaginal reduction or vaginal rejuvenation. There are two primary labiaplasty methods commonly used by cosmetic surgeons – the trim technique and the wedge technique.

Dr. Usha Rajagopal believes that any patient considering labiaplasty should do their research, get informed, and know exactly what they’re getting themselves into. Unfortunately, their is not a lot of good information about vaginal reduction or rejuvenation easily accessed on the internet, and even less talk about it in the media. In order to help keep women informed, Dr. Usha wrote an article discussing the different techniques used during labiaplasty.

Here are Dr. Usha’s bullet points on the 2 labiaplasty methods:

The Trim Method:

The trim technique is exactly what it sounds like: an approach whereby the excess tissue at the edges of the labia minora are cut away or “trimmed” to a more desirable shape and size. Within this technique, there are two options available: the classic trim technique (performed with traditional surgical instruments) and the laser labiaplasty technique.

The Wedge Technique:

What it is: The wedge technique involves removing a wedge-shaped section of tissue from the middle third of the labia and then stitching the top and bottom sections of the labia back together.

Dr. Usha goes in to much more detail about both of the primary labiaplasty techniques, including when to use which technique and the pros and cons of each technique. Read the full article HERE.

Benefits of Vaginoplasty or Vaginal Rejuvenation

June 23, 2016 SF Plastic Surgery

Vagina. Yes, I just wrote vagina. Vaginas are something that every woman has, but no one talks about. ‘The Vagina Monologues‘ was a huge hit, partially because it was so ground breaking for even using the word ‘vagina’ let alone for talking about it. So if vaginas are a taboo topic of conversation, certainly vagina surgery is not brought up in social circles or media often.

But guess what – just because they’re not talking about it, doesn’t mean they’re not doing it. Just as women have vaginas, there are more and more women opting for vaginoplasty or vaginal rejuvenation surgery. All kinds of mommy makeover procedures are, in fact, becoming more popular. Our bodies undergo a lot of changes with age, and things like childbirth can also greatly alter a woman’s body. Whether it be due to natural effects of aging or childbirth causing the vaginal tissues to become lax, vaginoplasty may be able to restore the tightness of the vaginal walls and opening.

Dr. Usha Rajagopal is a San Francisco based plastic surgeon with over 20 years of experience. As believes that any woman who is uncomfortable with her body has the right to learn about possible solutions. Seeing as how vaginal rejuvenation is not the talk of the town, she wanted to make more vaginoplasty information available to those seeking it. Here’s a excerpt from an article found on sfcosmeticsurgery.com

There are numerous benefits of vaginoplasty, such as:

Comfort
A loose vagina causes a lot of discomfort and unease due to constant friction. It often leads to itchy and painful sensations too – you might feel like scratching them to ease the itching but it makes the situation even worse…

Aging
Aging is natural – we can’t stop it, but we can definitely combat its effects like the loosening of your vaginal cavity…

Sexuality
Your sex life might have taken a backseat or been somewhat hampered, but with a tight vaginal opening, it can get back on track…

Are There Benefits to Having a Female Plastic Surgeon?

June 17, 2016 SF Plastic Surgery

Usha Rajagopal

Choosing a plastic surgeon can be a very daunting task as it is a very important decision. There is no easy answer to which plastic surgeon is best, it’s up to you to decide what is important to you and choose the best plastic surgeon for you. There are a few things that everyone should look for in their surgeon though. You will absolutely want a surgeon who is board certified. That surgeon should have a lot of experience, and you’ll also want to make sure they come highly recommended.

The real decision maker should be that intangible “it” that the judges on American Idol are always talking about. Of course for a plastic surgeon this has nothing to do with stage presence or singing ability, instead it is about whether you feel the surgeon understands your needs and expectations and can care for and comfort you when you are at your most vulnerable. You, of course, can’t know if a surgeon has “it” unless you meet with them in person. No one should pick a plastic surgeon without having a consultation with the doctor first.

Patients have notoriously found that in general female plastic surgeons are more sensitive. A female doctor may be more in tune with your feelings and desires, as well as be more considerate to your thoughts. Studies have shown that female doctors, on average, spend more time talking with their patients than their male counterparts. As a result, female plastic surgeons are more likely to take the time to extensively discuss the different treatment options available and to listen to their patient’s wants and needs to figure out what the best course of action is for that particular patient.

Some female patients believe that having a female plastic surgeon allows them to feel more comfortable and therefor more relaxed. This can make it easier to be more open about their issues with their appearance without fear or embarrassment. Often times patients want to discuss highly sensitive topics and desire cosmetic procedures for intimate areas, like labiaplasty or breast surgery. So, it’s not a surprise that many women feel more comfortable talking to a surgeon of the same sex about such procedures.

Often women feel more comfortable talking about their body issues to other women because they believe a woman can understand and relate to their feelings better than a man. Not only does a female surgeon understand the female body from a different perspective than a male doctor, but a female surgeon may also tend to be more empathic. If you think you’d be more comfortable opening up with a female plastic surgeon, then this should be considered when you’re picking a doctor. You’ll want to choose someone that you feel you can totally open up to and with whom you don’t feel embarrassed. Many women do not feel comfortable undressing, let alone showing their most private areas, to a male stranger, even if he is a doctor.

Many male patients also prefer a female plastic surgeons over a male plastic surgeon. Obviously this is not for the same reason, but actually for very similar reasons. Men would also like a better listener. Someone who can offer them empathy and sensitivity. Also, men can be very competitive by nature. Wether it is consciously or unconsciously, men tend to not want to show any signs of weakness to other men. This mind-set can make openly sharing their problems and perceived flaws with a male doctor very difficult for them, especially when it concerns sensitive issues like male gynecomastia (enlarged breasts). For some men, a female plastic surgeon might just be a better match.

Dr. Usha Rajagopal believes that choosing a plastic surgeon is a very complex decision and should not be taken lightly.

Correctional Labiaplasty – How to Fix a Botched or Bad Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty, also commonly referred to as Vaginoplasty is a cosmetic surgery procedure used to help restore the appearance of your vagina, increase vaginal tightness and help improve or maybe even eliminate unwanted discomfort in the vaginal area. Along with the developing trend of mommy makeovers, labiaplasty is growing more and more popular with each passing year. One might think that as the procedure becomes more popular there would be a decrease in botched outcomes, but unfortunately this isn’t true. Many people wanting to have the procedure done do not do the proper research before choosing their plastic surgeon. Perhaps in an attempt to save money, they go with a less experienced surgeon and end up with results that they simply aren’t happy with. The San Francisco Plastic Surgery and Laser Center wants you to know that you don’t have to live with your unwanted results – correctional labiaplasty is possible.

So what options are available to you when you aren’t happy with the results of your labiaplasty? Correctional labiaplasty is an option. But don’t make the same mistake twice. This time choose the right doctor. You want to be sure to go with a board certified and highly experienced surgeon for your correctional labiaplasty procedure.

Dr. Usha Rajagopal has more than 20 years of experience and specializes in such procedures as labiaplasty and correctional labiaplasty.

Cosmetic Surgery Isn’t Something to Be Ashamed Of

June 5, 2016 SF Plastic Surgery

cosmetic surgeryWhy does so much controversy surround cosmetic surgery?

As a plastic surgeon I often wonder why cosmetic surgery has so much controversy surrounding it. Why are some of my patients embarrassed to seek a plastic surgeon’s help? Why are some of my patients ashamed to admit they have had cosmetic procedures? In trying to answer these mysteries surrounding my profession I stumbled upon a blog post called “Cosmetic Surgery Doesn’t Have to Be Shameful” A really great read, this manifesto of sorts by Kate Fridkis brings up some interesting points. Having undergone plastic surgery herself, Fridkis has grown tired of having people shame her for her decisions, or hear them quietly whisper about their own procedures as if cosmetic surgery should be some sort of “embarrassing and shameful secret.”

From a surgeon’s perspective, I learned a lot about the social pressures my patients may be facing. Fridkis’ description of society’s ridiculous hypocricy, people’s inability to mind their own business and even some people’s determination to push plastic surgery to be viewed as superficial. Here are a few of the points she makes in her piece that I found particularly worthy of mention:

The truth is, unless you’re telling them, most people won’t even realize you’ve had a cosmetic procedure done

Plastic surgery is extremely popular in many countries worldwide, including Fridkis’ home country Australia, and the USA. With so many people going under the knife, odds are, you probably know a number of people who have had work done and you don’t even know it.

No one should feel embarrassed or ashamed for doing what they think is best for them – including having plastic surgery.

Like it or not, we live in a culture where looks absolutely matter. Fridkis description of our ‘superficial’ culture is absolutely true. We  live in a world that “gossips endlessly about the way women look, and rags ceaselessly on the public women who don’t look ‘good enough”. So to put so much pressure on appearances, while at the same time knocking anyone for ‘maintaining’ themselves seems a bit hypocritical.

Cosmetic surgery can be empowering – uplifting – life altering.

Many plastic surgery patients feel empowered after their surgeries. Whatever change their procedure offers them also bring them comfort in their own skin, confidence that was once hidden, and maybe even perhaps a peace with their appearance and with themselves.

Considering Labiaplasty?

May 30, 2016 SF Plastic Surgery

Are you considering labiaplasty?

considering labiaplasty

Labiaplasty is a specialized cosmetic surgery for correcting irregular or overly large labias. This will alter the vaginal appearance, by toning down the outer folds of the the tissue surrounding the vulva of the vagina known as the labia minora.

Labiaplasty is often misconceived as being only used for aesthetic purposes, but it is also used for medical purposes. Not only does labiaplasty alter the look of the vagina, it can also boost one’s comfort and confidence. Labiaplasty patients often feel better emotionally as well as physiologically.

Here are some of the reasons one might be considering labiaplasty:

  • Insecurity and discomfort caused by large vaginal folds.
  • Embarrassment or lack of self-confidence due to nonsymmetrical labia.
  • Wanting a firmer, more toned vagina.
  • Discomfort in physical activities due to the size or thickness of the labia.
  • Discomfort when wearing tight clothes because of labial size.
  • Labial disease or injury.
  • Hanging or protruding labia.

If you are considering labiaplasty, it is important to educate yourself. Dr. Usha Rajagopal truly belives that the best patients are the most well informed patients. Every patient is different, so the exact procedure will differ as well as the results. As with any operation, there could be chances of bleeding, infection and scarring, but on minor levels. In the case of under-correction, it is possible to remedy this with a second operation. These are just a few of the reasons it is necessary to choose your surgeon carefully. After researching and verifying credentials, and getting recommendations, it is important to meet the surgeon in person.

Dr. Usha Rajagopal is one of the most respected names in this field. Her work speaks volumes about her skills, honed for more than 20 years. If you’re considering labiaplasty, and would like to schedule a consultation, give the San Francisco Plastic Surgery and Laser Center a call today.

High Patient Satisfaction for Labiaplasty

May 27, 2016 SF Plastic Surgery

patient satisfaction

How can a controversial procedure have such high patient satisfaction?

Controversy is often caused by people making bold unsubstantiated statements to stir up a conversation. Cosmetic surgery or any elective procedure has historically had controversy surrounding it. Labiaplasty is no different. And like any controversy created by unproven statistics, there are always proven statistics that tell a completely different story. While labiaplasty may be thought of as controversial by some – it actually has high patient satisfaction. According to the results of an outcomes study that I conducted here at the San Francisco Plastic Surgery & Laser Center between November 2007 and October 2008, a large percentage of my labiaplasty patients were happy with their results.

The study was done on 52 patients over a twelve-month period. This was the total number of patients who underwent labiaplasty at the SF Plastic Surgery & Laser Center during the twelve-month period of the study. All 52 patients were surveyed, and the average patient satisfaction rating with the outcome of the procedure was a 9 out of 10. Nearly all of the 52 patients also reported an improvement in self-esteem as well as body image after the surgery. Their satisfaction with the recovery process was a little lower, but still relatively high: patients gave it an average of 8.25 on a 10-point scale. All 29 patients who answered the follow-up survey one month after surgery said they would recommend the procedure to friends.
