The internet can feel like a bottomless pit of information, so when I hear that there is a lack of information available online for any subject, I am shocked. To find out that researchers found that labiaplasty information, a specialty of mine, is lacking online, I am saddened.
In the past, you would have to seek out an expert to help you get informed on a certain subject. It could be a very tedious process. Now, more than ever though, social media and personal blogs are offering even more ways for individuals to find information. Not only is there more information available online, there are also more personal accounts. Finding information should be easy.
Researchers at the UCL Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Institute of Women’s Health, University College Hospital in London, England recently conducted a survey to assess online information that is available for those considering genital plastic surgery. They found that good information about these kinds of procedures is severely lacking.
These findings are very concerning to me. Many of my patients have sought my help because they were experiencing pain or discomfort on a daily basis. If they weren’t informed, they might not even know that labiaplasty could help rid them of their discomfort. I try hard to keep my patients informed both through my blog as well as in consultations. I hope that the information I share in my blog may also find its way to women looking for a solution to their problems
If anyone is considering genital cosmetic surgery, I would hope the information would be readily available for them online. I know that a more satisfactory experience is more likely when my patient is more in the know. I believe it is my responsibility as a plastic surgeon to educate my patients and protect their interests. I want each of my patients to know what they’re getting themselves into before they come in for any prcedure.
