Rated America’s Vainest City – Does Plastic Surgery in San Francisco Reign Supreme?

August 25, 2016 SF Plastic Surgery

As a leading plastic surgeon with more than twenty years of experience in the San Francisco Bay Area, I couldn’t help but be intrigued when I came across an article that ranks San Francisco as America’s vainest city. That’s right, according to findings by the Daily Beast, our beautiful little city by the bay is more into their looks than any other city in the nation.

I of course wanted to know more about this study. What do they mean by “vainest”? What criteria did they use to determine their results? What other American cities did they consider vain?

In the article “America’s Vainest Cities” surveyors used the combination of body mass index (BMI) figures and spending on “personal care” to determine their rankings. Personal care could mean anything from gym memberships to expenditures on beauty products. What they found, is that San Franciscans on a whole have a small BMI and are willing to spend big bucks to look as good as they do.

plastic surgery in san francisco

According to results published by the Daily Beast, the top 5 most vain cities are:

  1. San Francisco: Residents spend a whopping $111 monthly on personal care, 50.3% aren’t overweight, and 20.4% are gym members.
  2. Boston: At 23.2%, more people belong to gyms than in San Francisco, but they only spend $106 per month on personal care
  3. New York City: Personal care spending is just $81 a month per person
  4. Los Angeles: Approximately 39% of residents are not overweight.
  5. Hartford: Some 17.2% of residents belong to gyms.

To find out more and see the whole list of America’s 20 Vainest Cities, read the full article HERE.

Are you surprised by these findings? Do you think this means that plastic surgery in San Francisco is more popular than in other cities? Do you think these findings prove that San Francisco is the most vain city, or do you think these results really just prove that San Franciscans care more about their health?

Why Alcohol and Plastic Surgery Just Don’t Mix

August 22, 2016 SF Plastic Surgery

alcohol and plastic surgery

Having a glass of wine, a beer, or a cocktail with friends is something lots of people enjoy. It’s a great way to socialize or relax and unwind. However, if you’re planning on undergoing a plastic surgery procedure, it’s a habit you should give up in the weeks prior to your surgery. Here’s why drinking alcohol and plastic surgery can be hazardous for your body.

In a previous blog post I talked about cigarettes and nicotine being a vasoconstrictor that causes your blood vessels to constrict or close up. Alcohol is the flip flip side.  Alcohol is a vasodilator. Vasodilators cause your blood vessels to open up and flood your surface tissues.  This is bad for two reasons: 1)  this process takes blood away from your vital organs (like your brain and heart), and 2) it causes your body to swell. You’ll be swollen enough after surgery without adding to it with booze!

Another negative aspect of alcohol before plastic surgery is that it affects your blood platelets and causes them to be less active. Less active platelets means your blood won’t coagulate. This makes it difficult for your body to heal and  puts you at a higher risk for postoperative bleeding. Avoiding alcohol will help give you a better chance at a quick recovery.

Alcohol is also a diuretic (it make you need to pee more often than you should) which can lead to dehydration. Dehydration is big reason you don’t feel well when you’re hungover. Your body will already be dehydrated post surgery and adding any amount of alcohol to your body prior to your procedure could lead to discomfort post-operation.

Can a Mommy Makeover Restore Your Pre Baby Body?

August 19, 2016 SF Plastic Surgery

mommy makeoverYou’ve probably heard the new buzzword ‘mommy makeover’ making its way around the media, the internet and in your social circles, but perhaps you aren’t quite sure what it exactly means. The truth is, a mommy makeover can consist of a number of different cosmetic procedures. It is a broad term for treatments a woman may undergo after childbirth. These mommy makeover procedures are aimed at getting your pre-baby body back.  These procedures include:labiaplasty, breast augmentation, tummy tuck, femilift, liposuction, and even a brazilian butt lift.

Mommy makeovers aren’t just a fad or a buzzword, they area revolution. More and more women, including new moms are taking control of their lives and opting for such treatments. I think this can be partially attributed to society’s newfound and ever growing acceptance of cosmetic surgery. I believe mom’s should have the right to chose to have such work done without any scrutiny.

In order for a mom to be able to make the decision to have a “Mommy Makeover”, she first needs to know more about it. I want to help educate women, and get information out there. I found this great by Michael A. Bogdan MD, FACS that I believe is helpful in understanding what exactly a mommy makeover entails.

What is a “Mommy”?
First off, every one should know what a “mommy” is – we all have one! (And I’m even married to one!) All joking aside, any woman who has children is a mom, and is aware of the changes that come along with childbearing. Some women were lucky and were not negatively affected by pregnancy and breast-feeding, while the process has literally devastated others. A mommy makeover is any set of surgical procedures aimed at reversing the changes associated with childbearing, with the goal of returning to the “pre-baby” body. Since the changes are not always the same for every woman, the procedure is customized to suit the individual patient’s needs.

Labiaplasty vs Vaginoplasty – What’s the Difference?

August 16, 2016 SF Plastic Surgery

labiaplasty vs vaginoplasty

There are several factors that can cause a woman’s vaginal muscles to loosen. Childbirth, especially in the case of multiple children, and aging are the primary culprits in the loosening of vaginal muscles.

Regardless of the reason, loosening of vaginal muscles can cause inflated or thick labia. Some women have large, distended labia from birth. Inflated or thick labia can lead to discomfort when partaking in outdoor activities such as cycling or horse riding. Your sex life can be negatively affected as well. Regardless of the cause, an experienced, board certified plastic surgeon could help alleviate your discomfort and restore tightness to your vagina.

The newest technologies make it possible for a plastic surgeons to restore some tightness to your vagina. Surgeons are currently using 2 techniques: vaginoplasty and labiaplasty. A layperson may use these terms interchangeably. The fact is that these two procedures focus on completely different areas of the vaginal anatomy and are therefore very different procedures. It’s important to know the difference between labiaplasty and vaginoplasty. See below of a quick explanation of the difference between the two procedures.

Vaginoplasty vs Labiaplasty

Vaginoplasty

Often referred to as vaginal rejuvenation. This procedure works to tighten the inner muscles of the vagina by fusing the stretched muscle located at its rear end, which shortens it. A surgeon then uses sutures for the muscles to pile up and narrow the cavity. Thus, cleaning up extra vaginal lining, and tightening the soft tissues around it.

Labiaplasty

This procedure focuses solely on the labia minora and majora. These are commonly known as the “vaginal lips”. Labiaplasty enhances the appearance of the outer genital organs or reducing labia discomfort by reshaping and shrinking the size of the labia. There are two methods for this procedure.

To learn more about both procedures; labiaplasty and vaginoplasty, or decide which procedure might be right for you click HERE. This article will cover all you need to know including cost and recovery time.

Everything you need to know about Vaginal Rejuvenation or Vagina Reconstruction Procedures

August 13, 2016 SF Plastic Surgery

Years ago, nobody was admitting to having plastic surgery, let alone cosmetic treatments on private parts. But just as plastic surgery has become less taboo in our society, genital cosmetic surgery is also becoming more and more accepted. Although society is beginning to embrace plastic surgery of all types, including vagina reconstruction and rejuvenation, the subject still isn’t openly discussed.

Vaginoplasty is a well-known and commonly performed surgical procedure, yet it is still a subject most people know very little about. As the name implies, vaginoplasty is a form of vagina reconstruction or rejuvenation. It aims to tighten and tone any sagging skin around the vagina. It is commonly combined with labiaplasty for an even more complete vagina reconstruction. Labiaplasty is a totally different technique used to reshape the vaginal lips. Both of these procedures are performed both for aesthetic and practical reasons. Along with a number of other treatments aimed at getting your pre-baby body back, vaginoplasty and labiaplasty are both considered a mommy makeover procedure.

Why are “vagina reconstruction” and”mommy makeover” treatments still a no-no in conversation?

Mommy makeovers and vaginal rejuvenation surgeries are growing in popularity with each passing year, but for some reason they remain very taboo in conversation. Perhaps this is because they involve parts of the body that women are too self-conscious about to bring up. So while more women are going under the knife, they are staying hush-hush about their procedures. Maybe it’s because of the criticism vaginal reconstruction has met. In the past, surgeons have claimed the procedures are unnecessary and thus potentially unsafe. But these criticisms have been rebutted by numerous reputable surgeons with proof that the associated risks are minor and can be easily tackled. For whatever reason, I hope that women start to speak out about their positive experiences with mommy makeovers and that more women feel confident in their own choice to have such procedures performed on them.

Corrective Labiaplasty Services for “Botched” Labiaplasty

corrective labiaplastyNothing is worse than a procedure gone bad. It took so much to get you to go through with the first procedure, and now you truly don’t know what to do. Can you trust another surgeon? Is having a second procedure just going to make matters worse? Should you try again, or should you just live with the “botched” results?

If this has happened to you, please don’t give up. If you ended up with undesirable results from a labiaplasty surgery, perhaps Dr. Usha Rajagopal can help. A trusted plastic surgeon with more than 20 years of experience, Dr. Usha offers corrective labiaplasty services at her clinic the San Francisco Plastic Surgery and Laser Center.

In recent years, I’m hearing of more and more cases of “botched” labiaplasty. Unfortunately it seems to be a growing trend. Perhaps the problem is that so many women are choosing an unreliable clinic or inexperienced surgeon to perform their labiaplasty. Whatever the reason, no woman should be forced to live with unhappy results. It is perfectly natural to be upset after  a “botched” labiaplasty. You went though a lot – physically, emotionally, and financially. An improperly done procedure could leave you with an irregularly shaped vagina or even severe scarring. Dr. Usha may be able to help you fix both your physical scars as well as the emotional scars left in the wake of the improperly performed labiaplasty.

Considering Plastic Surgery?

August 4, 2016 SF Plastic Surgery

considering plastic surgeryAnyone thinking about plastic surgery probably has a ton of questions weighing on their minds. Is it right for me? Should I go through with it? What risks might be involved? How can my life change for the better? Where do I find a doctor? There’s so much one should consider before going through with any cosmetic procedure. There’s so much unknown involved. Plus there’s the figuring out all the logistical details, beginning with where and how to find the right doctor. Patients considering plastic surgery can feel very overwhelmed, but you don’t have to. There are plenty of online sources to help. Here’s a great article I found on smartbeautyguide.com by Mary Cunningham offering a few great suggestions for where to even begin with all your questions.

Here are Mary’s tips for anyone considering plastic surgery:

1. Research board-certified surgeons.

2. Research the procedure, recovery times and possible complications.

3. Adopt healthy habits. No time to start like the present!

4. Stop smoking.

Head to smartbeautyguide.com to read the full article, and find out more details of Mary’s suggestions.

Like Mary suggests, I fully believe it is important for anyone considering plastic surgery to truly know what they’re getting themselves into. Fortunately, cosmetic plastic surgery is an elective surgery, meaning you have time to figure everything out. Don’t rush into anything. Take your time and allow yourself to get fully prepared both mentally and physically. Like Mary said, the first and most important step is to find the right doctor. The right doctor, should be able to answer all your questions, and explain the procedure, the recovery, and any potential risks in full. Chose a doctor your feel comfortable with and whom you feel listens to you.

I found this How to Choose a Plastic Surgeon article at smartbeautyguide.com to help make your search for the right doctor a little easier.

Top 10 Qualities to look for in a Plastic Surgeon

A doctor’s board-certification is the best indicator of his or her training in a particular medical or surgical specialty.
2. ASAPS Membership
American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) membership is by invitation only.
3. Experience
Patients should ask about the surgeon’s experience with the particular procedure being considered.
4. Facility Accreditation
Make sure your procedure will be performed in an accredited surgical facility.
5. Hospital Privileges
Be sure the surgeon has operating privileges in an accredited hospital for the same procedure being considered.
6. Reliable References
Asking your primary care doctor or a friend for recommendations is a good place to start, but the surgeon’s board-certification should always be verified independently by contacting the American Board of Plastic Surgery (www.abplsurg.org).
7. Thoroughness
The consultation is an important opportunity for questions to be asked and answered. It should include a candid discussion of risks as well as benefits of the surgery.
8. Rapport
